This chapter explores various consequence-based arguments on the ethics of germline gene editing. First, the chapter distinguishes between descriptive and normative consequence arguments. Second, it takes a deep dive into arguments related to risks and safety, on the one hand, and into arguments related to prospective benefits, on the other. Both arguments for and against germline gene editing appeal to different kinds of consequence-arguments. The chapter highlight various questions raised by a focus on the potential consequences. This includes the question of who the beneficiary of germline gene editing is, whether germline gene editing can be considered to be a therapeutic, and how germline gene editing compares to embryo selection. The chapter distinguishes between descriptive and normative consequence arguments and between weak and strong normative consequence arguments. A key take away is how different techno-optimists and techno-pessimists assess the expected outcomes of germline gene editing.
