Systems Management (SM) deals with the control of systems in the system life cycle (Fig. 3.1) from the start of operation (SOP) to the start of decommissioning (palliation). In terms of cognitive science, it is about completing tasks (Sect. 3.2). Systems Management is also referred to as Operations Management (e.g. Thonemann 2015). In practice and in business theory, however, management is often associated exclusively with political leadership (G-part-system in the AGIL scheme according to Fig. 2.4) (e.g. Thommen and Achleitner 2006, p. 106; Staehle et al. 1999, p. 192). Such a narrowing is expressly not intended in the following. Instead, this term is understood in the sense of its etymological origin (from the Latin “mansionem agere” for “to run the house (for the owner”)) as housekeeping according to primarily economic aspects. The term “housekeeping” can be used to refer to all public and private households, including those of private companies or non-profit organizations.
