Outlook: Onwards into the Fourth Dimension
摘要
Video game genres, independently from critical patterns of traditional genre research, are vague and open or broad and unspecific, or they fall into multiple different patterns that cannot be understood together. The three-dimension model is the first step to understanding the impossible taxonomy of video games. However, it has its limitations. The modding culture of games opens up multiple possibilities for adapting the gaming experience, and players can choose which ones they would like to experience. Mods can create new hybrids of the fiction aesthetic genre dimension. Sandbox games portray the possibility of self-realisation in virtual worlds, and the rapid pace of technological change adds to the challenges for video game genres. When dealing with literature focusing on the taxonomy of genres, critical and additional questions arise, some of which are stated at the end of the chapter.
