We have already pointed out in the preface that and why we no longer use the term “Soft Computing” as a general umbrella term for the techniques presented in this book. Instead, we refer to the methodological procedures demonstrated here with the terms “Artificial IntelligenceArtificial Intelligence (AI)” (AI) and “Artificial LifeArtificial Life (AL)” (AL). As noted, these are methods that are heuristically oriented towards human thought processes and biological phenomena, and thus come significantly closer in content to the comprehensive term “nature-analogous procedures” than is possible with the term Soft Computing, which is ambiguous in several respects. Furthermore, the concepts—and dreams—of realizing artificial beings and especially artificial intelligence are associated with long-standing ideas that are much older than computer modeling.
