The original idealistic goals of the early internet have obviously not really been realized. The freedom of access to information is nowadays restricted and controlled from many sides. Furthermore, the underlying technology is a point of criticism and also a security risk, as it is often difficult or even impossible to operate on the internet without disclosing personal data. Additionally, it is gradually being recognized that not every content can be free of charge. The production of high-quality content requires payment for the effort and work that goes into it. For this reason, since the beginning of the 2020s, work has been underway on the development of a decentralized internet, which is based on the idea of ownership and is intended to replace the interactive Web 2.0. This development is accompanied by new technological approaches such as blockchain, smart contracts, and NFTs and is intended to form the basis for the metaverse.
