“Telephone works”—Symbolic Communication Technology in Twin Peaks
摘要
The third season of Twin Peaks – The Return (USA 2017; Dir.: David Lynch) confirms it: Electricity is the force that holds the world together at its core. This contribution is dedicated to a previously little-noticed electronic medium: analog telephony. Thus, a frequently ridiculed character also comes into focus: Lucy Brennan, guardian of the telephone in the Sheriff Station and of the telephone networks in general. The contribution first explores to what extent the telephone plays a central symbolic role both for the plot lines of the series and for aesthetic self-reflection, and secondly, how it asserts itself in the face of competing digital communication offerings that emerge in 2017. This shows that Twin Peaks can be understood as a homage to the threatened media and cultural technique of telephoning.
