For a long time, the hegemonic culture of the German-speaking world has provided for a hierarchical order of the arts. At the top is the ‘high’, the autonomous art, below that is the applied art, and further down follow the special museums for world cultures (formerly ethnology), for architecture, for film, for caricature, etc. The ‘high’ art includes opera, drama and visual arts. The ‘high’ arts include opera, drama and fine arts. Their rank is expressed in their appearance in cities.
