Phenomenal and Frustrating: Students in a German Language Class Interact with Digitized Holocaust Testimony
摘要
This paper describes and evaluates an instructional project using interactive digitized testimony by a Holocaust survivor. Students learning German (intermediate level) at a university in the US participated in the spring of 2023 in this project. They first read excerpts from the survivor’s autobiography in German and subsequently formulated and posed questions to the eyewitness on a digital platform. Students’ reactions are highlighted and discussed in the context of current research on the effectiveness of teaching about the Holocaust with interactive media. Although participants found some aspects of the interaction difficult, they also felt they benefitted from this unique experience.
