Navigating the Digital Unknown: How a Qualitative Study on Digital Testimonies Was Adapted to the Digital Realm During the COVID-19 Pandemic
摘要
After the unexpected global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the conduct of a qualitative study on digital testimonies involving students aged 14 to 16 had to be swiftly adapted to new and unfamiliar circumstances. This resulted in a rather unique research design in which both the research participants and the researchers, along with the medium itself, acted, interacted and functioned entirely within the digital space: In a four-step data collection process, the students engaged with Holocaust survivor Abba Naor’s web-based digital testimony and discussed their experiences in online focus groups using videoconferencing software. This novel digital environment will be reflected upon in this article with particular focus on the online focus groups. Distinctive challenges associated with this complex digital space will be identified, and corresponding strategies that proved effective in dealing with these difficulties will be presented.
