Field research in all regions and countries of the world provided Ludger Kühnhardt with extensive insights into the relationships between nation-statehood and regional cooperation. He developed the concept of ‘region-building’, which fundamentally expands the political science category of nation-building. Beyond his research, Kühnhardt was involved in practical cooperation with the first research institute in Africa that exclusively deals with issues of regional integration.
