This chapter introduces various existing versions of steering systems and afterward explains the contribution of modern steering systems (functionalities) to advanced driver assist systems and automated driving. Moreover, the optional additional functionalities when using rear axle steering are described. Both the necessary robust development methods of system engineering, which are necessary to implement seamless requirement management in order to guarantee safety, and the technical design of the product to ensure robustness are discussed. Finally, an overview of the special role of future steer-by-wire steering systems is presented.
