This chapter describes the development of the tool EVITA, starting from the original question “How to evaluate anti-collision systems for longitudinal traffic?” The structure and function of EVITA are described. An introduction to the basic evaluation methodology for anti-collision systems is given. However, a presentation of results is omitted with reference to the 3rd edition of the book. Due to its ability to provide rear-end collision critical situations in driving tests without endangering the study participants, EVITA is used in numerous studies with a wide variety of questions. As an example, an overview of the current and future application areas of EVITA is given.
