In the last 20 years cinema has been confronted with new media systems radically changing the structures of production and consumption. Digitalization and social media have brought up new relations to the audience, individualizing film consumption. Consequently, cinema has searched for economic salvation with a new system of central state and regional subventions and by coproducing with the TV monopolies, the state RAI and Berlusconi’s Mediaset. Aesthetically the auteur films continued with more intimate and personal narration. Bertolucci made his last films, Bellocchio is still productive today. The directors of the Nuovo Cinema Italiano went on with their work, reinforced by important newcomers: Matteo Garrone and Paolo Sorrentino, whose Gomorra (Gomorrah) resp. La grande bellezza (The Great Beauty) achieved huge international successes. They are surrounded by a greater number of young (male and female) directors who guarantee the continuation of a manifold movie landscape of Italian cinema for the present and the future.
