Tourism in historical ensembles corresponds to a time travel that leads “to the remains of great pasts”, writes Valentin Groebner in his book Retroland. It is complemented by landscape sensations and the search for the beautiful. In doing so, one finds something soothing for mind and body. The journey into “time as a place of heightened sensation” allows travellers to immerse themselves in history without their own affiliation to modernity being threatened or questioned. The own origins or those of other societies appear foreign and enticingly exotic at the same time: attractive and sufficiently contrasting to everyday life to guarantee high intensity of experience. But they also establish a connection to the experiences of youth and trigger sensations, awaken feelings akin to melancholy.
