In 1968, the theoretical biologist Aristid Lindenmayer created L-systems as an algorithmic formalism for describing developmental processes in biology. In conjunction with computer graphics, they were initially used for modelling simple multicellular organisms, and later for the realistic representation of plants. A key aspect is the recursive self-similarity of the structures (take a look at a Romanesco broccoli). In this chapter, we show a series of simple examples.
