Cancer in adolescence seems to be virtually predestined for serial storytelling due to the real chances of cure in this age group and the protracted, usually dramatic and emotional course of the disease. So far, however, fictional film and television productions have hardly dealt with cancer in adolescents. One of the few exceptions is the Netflix production Alexa & Katie (Alexa and Katie, USA 2018–). Following recent oncological studies on adolescents and young adults with cancer, this paper presents a media-specific model of analysis that can be used as a starting point for an investigation of cancer-related themes and motifs with their narrative, dramaturgical, figurative, and genre-specific features. The results of the sample analysis show that the handling of the life-threatening disease in the youth series Alexa & Katie is done in an exceedingly realistic way. At the same time, the life-threatening illness is rarely the focus. Rather, the series focuses on the protagonist’s attempt to put the disease behind her. By focusing on the developmental stages of adolescence, the Netflix production succeeds in portraying the topic of cancer in children and adolescents in a realistic way.
