Emojis are increasingly used by company employees when communicating with customers through digital media, yet the effects and mechanisms have hardly been explored. Previous research in this area has focused primarily on the impact of using one single Emoji by an employee in responses to customer inquiries. We tested the effect of the number of Emojis used by service employees in digital communication with customers. We investigated whether employees should use Emojis in communications to customers and if so, how many Emojis (few vs. many) they should use. We found that service employees should use a few Emojis when responding to inquiries to appear warmer (meaning more personable) and increase perceived service quality. However, they should not overdo the use of Emojis to avoid compromising perceptions of service quality.
