The following essay analyzes the changing role of taboo(s) in the course of social change from a sociological point of view. Thereby the transformation of the social functions of taboos from securing social integration towards a marker of seemingly unquestioned basics of social life are focussed as well as the dynamics of de-tabooing and re-tabooing in modern western societies. These developments are exemplified by the changes in dealing with mental illnesses in society. Some reflections on the changing and lasting functions of taboo will be found at the end.
