The article focuses on the role of romantic narratives in the process of tabooing violence and human rights violations committed by rebel groups in the conflict with the Gaddafi regime in 2011. In pursuit of this it employs a method of narrative analysis to British newspapers and parliamentary debates which focuses on the elements of setting, characterization and emplotment. It shows how the story of the “rebel” was told as a romantic narrative in which the heroic, but likeable rebel is struggling against a stronger and unjust evil order for an ideal such as democracy, freedom and an utopian future. Counter-narratives which engage with the taboo of crimes and human rights violations by rebels are in contrast strategically silenced, refuted, ridiculed while at the same time violation of the taboo are justified and embedded in the romantic narrative.
