Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne neglected disease prevalent in several parts of the world. This disease’s clinical manifestations vary depending on the infecting Leishmania subspecies, resulting in different clinical forms such as cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral. This neglected tropical disease can be fatal if not treated appropriately. The current drugs used to treat this illness accompany some serious side effects along with emerged resistance. Hence, it is imperative to identify some novel druggable candidates and to develop them further to overcome such serious drawbacks. Interestingly, nature offers a valuable range of phytochemicals with therapeutic efficiency against different health problems including leishmaniasis. Recently, alkaloids in particular have shown significant efficiency when tested against different strains of Leishmania. Therefore, the present review covers the literature reports on natural alkaloids having anti-leishmanial potential with the aim to aid the research related to this immensely beneficial class of natural product against this deadly disease.
