The oncologic patient undergoing liver surgery presents unique challenges to the perioperative team. Indications for liver surgery can include both primary malignant lesions, metastatic malignant lesions, and benign masses. A thorough preoperative examination including oncologic assessment and evaluation of comorbidities is imperative to ensure a patient is optimized for surgical intervention. Intraoperative management includes both anesthetic, fluid, and blood managements as well as a thoughtful surgical approach. Vigilant monitoring for postoperative complications is essential to ensure excellent outcomes. One of the most serious complications, postoperative liver failure, can be supported by molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS).
