Gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies account for a significant proportion of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, biliary tract, small intestine, colon, and anus collectively comprise some of the most common and lethal solid tumors, many of which require surgical intervention as a cornerstone of curative or palliative treatment strategies (Sung et al., CA Cancer J Clin 71(3):209–249, 2021; Arnold et al., Gastroenterology 159(1):335–349.e15, 2020). This chapter will focus on GI malignancies of the small bowel, colon, and anus as separate chapters of this textbook focus on the other types of GI malignancies listed above.
