The chapter takes stock of the growing quantitative literature on outcomes for the forcibly displaced in low- and middle-income countries, where the vast majority of refugees and internally displaced persons live. The review discusses how the latest assessments of the determinants of the welfare of forcibly displaced populations and the role that policy can play have attempted to address the issues of selection into displacement and policy endogeneity. While the literature has expanded significantly over the last decade, data availability remains a binding constraint for researchers. As a result, evidence to date remains focused on specific settings with the welfare of internally displaced populations largely under-researched.
