Pigmentation disorders are characterized by increased or decreased skin pigment, which can have a negative psychosocial impact and cause stigma. Individuals of darker skin have an increased frequency of pigmentary changes. Occupational pigmentation disorders have multiple causes and are common, particularly in developing countries where safety and product regulations are lacking. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation is the most common pigmentary change and occurs after injury or inflammation, or after drug or metal exposure. Occupational leukoderma (depigmentation) is mainly caused by exposure to phenol and catechol derivatives and shows some similarities with vitiligo. Skin-whitening creams and other household products can also cause leukoderma. Injury and inflammation can cause postinflammatory hypopigmentation, which has many differential diagnoses. Most pigmentation disorders gradually resolve after treating the underlying disorder or avoiding the exposure, although this can take months to years.
