Traditionally, the production of animals for fur has been carried out as a part of general farming; however, large-scale fur farms seem to be the prevailing model nowadays. Such facilities are highly specialized with thousands caged animals of one species and dozens of workers tending them. Zoonotic infections, bioaerosols from animal feed and feces and excreta, as well as dust from cage bedding and animal allergens are the major occupational exposures of fur farm workers. Chemical exposures include disinfectants, insecticides, parasiticides and other veterinary drugs both during cage cleaning and retrieval of furs. Fur dressing and dyeing is associated with exposure to further chemicals like tanning agents formic acid, glycolic acid, and chromate. In fur-garment industry, the further step of fur processing, dyes including para-phenylenediamine and related chemicals, remnants of chromium and other tanning chemicals, as well as glues can cause skin problems among employees. These exposures may cause allergic or irritant contact dermatitis. Allergens of animal fur and dander cumulated throughout the entire process and may lead to contact urticaria or protein contact dermatitis.
