Improving Workforce Readiness Through Research Education
摘要
In computing disciplines—such as Cybersecurity—where the lay of the land changes on a daily basis, graduates of these academic programs must be able to deal with problems that have not been encountered before. Consequently, it is no longer sufficient for curricula to solely convey academic knowledge. In order to properly prepare a workforce to meet the needs of today’s society, modern curricula must include components through which students gain competency in research methodology, problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication. In this paper, we argue that these competencies are most effectively acquired through research education, which should be integrated throughout all levels of higher education—from Bachelors to Masters and PhD programs. In this context, we present our experience with the INSuRE (INformation Security Research and Education) program and discuss lessons learned to lead the way for developing similar opportunities for other rapidly evolving computing disciplines such as AI.
