Managing dental care for patients with impaired liver function can be especially difficult due to the many roles this organ plays. Hemostatic problems in patients with liver disease are complex and primarily involve insufficient production of coagulation factors and decreased circulating platelets. For oral surgical procedures, it is advisable to consult with the patient’s physician. Although the International Normalized Ratio (INR) and platelet count do not reliably predict bleeding risk, assessing hemostatic function before surgery remains important. The decision to administer fresh-frozen plasma or platelets typically depends on the planned surgery and lab results, especially the INR and platelet count. This chapter also provides guidelines for the dental management of patients who have undergone liver transplantation.
