Innovation is a mindset or way of thinking. Positioning one’s problem-solving ability to result in innovation is key to breakthroughs and discovery. The innovative mindset is gender independent. More gender nuances may exist in bringing innovation to bear. This chapter discusses several aspects of the innovator’s characteristics, engineering mindset and innovator’s mindset. Additionally, we highlight some innovative ideas that have changed the way we do things as a society. We discuss the differences between innovators and entrepreneurs since they can be referred to interchangeably but are not the same. We talk too about demystifying innovation, understanding creative roadblocks, viewing innovation as problem solving, presenting a checklist to evaluate innovative ideas and providing a brief discussion on research vs. innovation, as we are using the term in this text.
