The Politics of Gender and the Gradual Erosion of the African Family Values: Engaging with Dorothy Oluwagbemi-Jacob and Diana Ofana
摘要
In this chapter, I critically engage with the conclusions of Dorothy Oluwagbemi-Jacob and Diana Ofana to show that the Euro-American project of Saving African Women (SAW), couched in the ideas of universal victimhood, solidarity, and equality of women (irrespective of their cultural backgrounds), is one of the pseudo-universals grounded in Western patriarchal culture that is being dumped on Africa. I contend that despite the homogenization of women’s experiences that Euro-American feminism portrays, the reality is that African women’s experiences differ culturally from those of Euro-American women. Additionally, I analyze how Euro-American feminism influences African family values and demonstrate the implications of uncritically adopting Euro-American family ideals in Africa.
