This chapter argues that what has been observed as women’s subordination evident in silencing women and limiting their exercise of power, is not the original African culture. Instead, it is the outcome of the introduction of women’s inferiorization into Africa through colonial policies. To accomplish its purpose, this chapter provides insight into the distinction between human sexuality and gender and explores the dynamics of gender in pre-colonial Africa, as well as the turmoil that colonial gender politics introduced. It further brings decolonization to bear on gender concepts and issues and the consequent opportunities and challenges it implicates for the ongoing debate.

摘要
