We provide an overview of the 2024 edition of the ECML PKDD Discovery Challenge track. Challenges like these can generate knowledge about a specific problem, engage new audiences and communities, and simply be fun. Additionally, they can provide more insight into emerging new methods and models or into the behaviour and performance of data scientists on real-world problems. In this paper, we reflect on the value of challenges like these and provide a high-level overview of the review process of this year’s challenge proposals and the accepted discovery challenges. Each of the accepted discovery challenges also has a more detailed paper accepted in this volume.
