Clinical Bioethics in Latin America: Current State
摘要
This chapter reviews clinical bioethics in Latin America by outlining some ethical problems identified, some challenges related to patient participation in health decisions and presents the current state of Clinical Ethics Committees (CECs) in the region. The development of clinical ethics in Latin America is characterized by its cultural and contextual differences, as well as its local heterogeneity. CECs serve as a practical application of clinical ethics, supported in different kinds of regulations, with consultative, educational, and normative functions. Their efficacy hinges on overcoming challenges and remaining responsive to local contexts, thereby enhancing healthcare quality protecting patient rights and providing patient-centered medicine.
