Although some crises can be predicted, such as an economic downturn or the implementation of new federal regulations that alter Medicare payments, many crises, like natural disasters, are unexpected. Surviving a medical crisis requires a management style that differs from managing typical business operations. Successful crisis management can result in a stronger practice following the resolution of the crisis. This chapter will discuss the steps necessary to be proactive and prepare for a crisis before it occurs. Crisis management involves deliberate steps, including identifying your leadership team, articulating a recovery plan, communicating effectively and honestly, leading by example, and planning for the next crisis.
