Every institution and medical practice will at some time experience a crisis. These crises include financial, personnel, public relations, cyberattacks, and even natural disasters. Although some crises can be predicted, such as an economic downturn or the implementation of new federal regulations that alter Medicare payments, many crises, like natural disasters, are unexpected. Surviving a medical crisis requires a management style that differs from managing typical business operations. Successful crisis management can result in a stronger practice following the resolution of the crisis. This chapter will discuss the steps necessary to be proactive and prepare for a crisis before it occurs. Crisis management involves deliberate steps, including identifying your leadership team, articulating a recovery plan, communicating effectively and honestly, leading by example, and planning for the next crisis.
