Multidimensional, Intersectional, and Entangled Inequalities
摘要
Drawing on a broad overview of the recent literature on social inequalities, this chapter develops the concept of entangled inequalities, which expands conventional understandings of inequality in several directions. With respect to inequalities of what, I highlight the multidimensional character of inequality, encompassing not only social distances in terms of income and wealth but also political asymmetries, existential inequalities, and socio-ecological inequalities. Regarding inequalities between whom, I adopt an intersectional approach that addresses not only asymmetries between individuals but also inequalities affecting groups structured by gender, race, ethnicity, and other significant categories. At the level of inequalities when, I examine hierarchies not only from a synchronic perspective but also in terms of the historical production of existing inequalities. Finally, with respect to inequalities, where I focus on the entanglements among inequality structures across different regions of the world.
