We examine the literature to establish the criteria or conditions that might be necessary for a secession movement to emerge and potentially be successful. From this examination emerges the criteria laid out by Viva Ono Bartkus. We also establish the possible relationship between political polarization and secession desires. Other motivations, such as individual dissatisfaction, polarization, and outside agitation, are also explored. The relevant law and whether there is a right to secede are discussed.
