Was Mars once or perhaps still an abode for life? Did water play an important role in shaping the Martian surface? These questions have driven the bulk of Mars funding and exploration. More space missions have flown past, orbited, crashed into or landed on Mars than any other planet, yet direct evidence of past or present life is yet to be found.
