Transforming Urban Commutes: Innovations in Smart Mobility and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
摘要
Urban transportation has been redefined by digital technology and global sustainability imperatives. To improve urban commuting, smart mobility and intelligent transport systems (ITS) represent a paradigm change that integrates business models, data analytics and information and communication technology (ICT). This chapter examines how the modes of transportation have changed with time, moving from traditional motorized system to digitally networked multimodal systems. It describes several key ITS applications such as advanced traffic management, traveller information services and smart ticketing, MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service), connected and autonomous modes of transport. This leads to the discussion of ITS as an actor of conservation, with regard to environment, society and economy at large in delivering intelligent and creative solutions for transportation. The chapter highlights regulatory frameworks as a key condition of success for the implementation of smart mobility services. But resilience, interoperability and equity are only possible with smart regulation, open data policies, equitable planning and strong public-private partnerships. Not only will it be the case for the future of mobility but the next generation technology like AI, block chain, digital twin and renewable energy integration will shape the future of mobility. Their potential, however, depends on ethical governance and human-centred design. The chapter concludes by recommending policy makers, planners, industry practitioners and researches on how to frame smart mobility as a modest urban commuting solution that is sustainable and equitable.
