The capabilities of generative AI are sweeping across many areas, bringing about lasting and disruptive changes to the world of work. These tools are also widely used in software development. However, due to the relatively short time span, there are still open questions and work required on well-researched procedures and on widely accepted best practices for the application of AI for SE. Our study, based on a questionnaire, provides insight into the current use of these technologies in the daily development and engineering work of 116 people engaged in this domain in Austrian companies. The goal was to create a basis for further measures in research, education, and corporate strategies. The results indicates the current main application of AI for technical tasks and showed that software engineers are aware of possible risks and opportunities when using generative AI for software engineering tasks.
