Culture and Society
摘要
This chapter introduces readers to the foundational role of culture in shaping African societies. It explores how cultural elements such as norms, values, taboos, beliefs, customs, and symbols provide cohesion, identity, and meaning across diverse African communities. In addition, the chapter examines key cultural practices, notably language and religion, that sustain collective life and inform social structures, identities, and interactions. Central to this discussion is an understanding of how African cultures have undergone processes of change in response to colonialism, postcolonial transitions, globalization, and modernity. These encounters have both disrupted and enriched cultural life, with African communities often responding through selective adoption, resistance, and creative adaptation, thereby producing dynamic and progressive contemporary societies (Eze, 2014).
