Nursing Teleconsultation for Older Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: A Gerontechnology Tool for the Promotion of Care-of-The-Self
摘要
An exploratory study was conducted to determine the effects of nursing teleconsultation, grounded in the Partnership Intervention Model, on elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) starting insulin therapy. The qualitative case study focuses on two older adults, aged 65 and 73, who received teleconsultation follow-ups after initiating insulin. The study assessed the effects on capillary glucose levels, nutritional adherence, and physical exercise. Results showed significant improvements in glucose management, with both participants experiencing reduced blood glucose levels. However, maintaining consistent physical activity and adhering to dietary recommendations remained challenging. Teleconsultation proved effective in enhancing insulin self-management and recognizing hyperglycemia symptoms. The study highlights the potential of teleconsultation as a gerontechnology tool for improving chronic disease management and promoting self-care among older adults with diabetes. However, lifestyle interventions require further emphasis for long-term success.
