Introduction
摘要
This chapter presents the argument for a need to examine politeness at a localised level rather than only pursue universal or discursive approaches. This approach allows the participants’ voices, values, and perspectives to be heard. The tension between societal and personalised politeness is highlighted through using Mead’s concepts of the creative I and the conforming me. By employing first-, second-, and third-wave categorisation to understand politeness research, localised politeness practices, and patterns can be seen to be both structured and deviating and so allow interlocutors to express a degree of choice and individuality.
