Over the course of the Fifth Republic, the conservative party has historically provided the most Presidents and Prime Ministers. This chapter traces the party’s transformation from Gaullist dominance to its current weakened position. It specifically examines its relations with both centrist liberal and far-right competitors in order to explain why it remains a relevant actor in the party system.
