This chapter examines the origins of the current constitution by looking at previous regimes and the events that led to the adoption of the Fifth Republic in 1958 in the context of the Algerian War. It describes the vision of the regime’s founders, led by Charles de Gaulle, and the main characteristics and early implementation of the constitution.
