Leadership Role of Higher Education in Enhancing Mental Health in Oman’s Universities
摘要
The increasing student diversity each year in private universities in Oman has brought with it a number of complicated challenges related to mental health. This study attempts to identify the role of higher education leadership in addressing such challenges by examining the issues of mental health, especially those affecting groups from the Bedouin and rural areas and others struggling with the language barrier. A major concern is that the influence of English language proficiency on academic success and stress, in turn, affects the mental well-being. While mental health has recently been recognized as an important factor in student success, there are limited support systems in Omani universities to help students deal with these issues effectively. This chapter identifies the role of higher education leadership in the creation of a supportive campus environment through strategic actions such as specialized academic support, easily accessible mental health services, and the development of an inclusive campus culture, using a qualitative approach with secondary data. This also presents the psychological problems of anxiety, depression, and stress arising among the students because of adjusting to academic and social demands. This thus means that universities hold great potential to make a high degree of improvement in the field of student well-being by implementing strategies centered on the needs of the students, community engagement, and technology-based solutions involving mobile mental health applications. This research underlines that leadership should give priority to mental health, resource visibility, and stigma reduction associated with mental health issues. It also calls for the continued development of leadership training programs focused on emotional intelligence and strategic decision-making. Eventually, an integrated and holistic approach to the mental health of students will ensure that there is higher academic success with increased personal resilience, benefiting both students and Omani society in general.
