Use-Wear Analysis of the Chalcolithic Stone Jewellery from the Sites of the Upper and Middle Kama Region
摘要
The article presents the results of a use-wear analysis of 25 serpentinite ornaments from the two Chalcolithic sites: the Chashkinskoe Ozero II encampment and the Bor I settlement located in the Upper and Middle Kama region. The analysis shows that there are several groups of traces on the jewellery: production, decoration, wearing, and post-depositional (exposure to the layer). The later is caused by some secondary material, sand grains or other, adhering to the specimens and deforming their surface. Traces of production appeared with abrasive processing, drilling, and finishing polishing. The decoration includes scraping or sawing the grooves, followed by polishing. In the Cis-Urals, this decorative element has never been found on decorations before. The traces of wear include smoothing the surface around the holes and rounding their edges. Considering the position of the traces, we have reconstructed four methods of attaching the pieces to clothing: vertical, diagonal, horizontal and multi-beam. As the finds of the Garinskaya culture objects are isolated and most of the specimens are broken in the area of the holes, we cannot determine to which element of clothing they were attached. Therefore, one of the further objectives is to conduct an experimental use-wear study of the ornaments production and wear.
