A date can perhaps be set for the beginning of international law of war and humanitarian treaties: 24 June 1859, the date of the Battle of Solferino in the Second Italian War of Independence, with thousands dead and tens of thousands wounded and missing on both sides. The sight of the thousands of wounded left to themselves left an impression on a Swiss businessman, the Calvinist Henry Dunant (1828–1910), who described his horror in a book—Un Souvenir de Solférino. At the same time, he emphasised the participation of the local women: “But the women of Castiglione [dello Stiviere] seeing that I make no distinction of nationality, follow my example by showing the same benevolence to all those men of such different origins and who are all equally foreign to them”. “All brothers”, they repeated, moved. “Honour to these charitable creatures, honour to the women of Castiglione!”
