The University Research Process Oriented Toward Sustainability: A Case Study of the Technical University of Manabí
摘要
This study examines the research management process at the Technical University of Manabí (UTM), emphasizing its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to the environment and sustainability. As a key territorial development actor, the university is responsible for producing knowledge that addresses social, economic, and ecological challenges. The main objective is to assess how the institutional research process contributes to the achievement of SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), and 15 (Life on Land). A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining surveys and semi-structured interviews with 59 faculty researchers and 7 vice-deans in charge of Outreach, Research, and Graduate Studies. The findings highlight progress in scientific culture, evidenced by increased indexed publications, participation in research networks, and projects with a sustainability focus. Research lines are aligned with local environmental and social issues, and specialized centers foster collaboration among researchers, students, and communities. Despite regulatory advances, challenges persist in integrating SDGs transversally into research planning and management. Greater coordination among academic stakeholders is needed for effective implementation. The adoption of clear policies, capacity strengthening, continuous training, and active engagement with the productive and social sectors are essential for consolidating sustainable research management that effectively enhances quality of life and environment.
