In this chapter, key constructs of asexuality are defined. The spectrum of asexuality and microlabels that define nuances in asexuality are presented. Queer-affirming practices are highlighted throughout this chapter. I introduce readers to the impact of language on affirming care and the role of cultural humility when providing medical and mental health services to asexuals and other queer individuals. Readers are presented with foundational research on asexuality. Finally, the goals of the book and assumptions guiding the framework of the concurrent chapters are presented.
