On the morning of Simchat Torah, 7 October 2023, at 06:29, residents of Israel woke up to a heavy barrage of rockets and missiles fired by the Hamas terrorist organisation. Sirens sounded in southern, central and coastal communities, as well as in the Jerusalem Hills. What was still unknown was that, under the cover of heavy gunfire, thousands of armed Hamas terrorists had succeeded in breaching the highly sophisticated and costly perimeter fence and infiltrating IDF bases and nearby communities.
