Background Information on Minimalistic Consumption
摘要
Minimalism emerged through several waves and was influenced by ideas of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, the Bauhaus art style of the 1920s, the cultural and arts movement in the 1960s in America and was further shaped by the simple living movement in 1990 and 2000. Today social media, YouTube, and advertising campaigns heavily shape the minimalist philosophy. Minimalism can be described as a consciously chosen lifestyle that reduces possessions and consumption to focus on personally defined essentials, aiming for meaning, freedom, and happiness. It reflects intrinsic motivation, ongoing self-evaluation, and value-driven consumption while rejecting societal consumption pressures. Minimalism emphasizes simplicity, sustainable consumption, and intentional living and leads to enhanced well-being, mental clarity, and financial freedom through strategic possession management and mindful routines. Minimalists adopt diverse practices, including decluttering, efficient mobility, digital minimalism, and downshifting work hours, focusing on what is truly essential for personal growth, freedom, and meaningful social interactions.
